History of Halloween

Understanding the history of Halloween

Black cats. Pumpkins. Witches. These are all images of Halloween. Yet, where did Halloween originate and did these images have anything to do with those first Halloweens?

The first Halloweens are thought to have originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.  During these festivals, people would light bonfires and wear costumes as a way to ward off ghosts.

During the eighth century, Pope Gregory III chose November 1 as the name to honor the saints and the martys. This day was known as “All Saints Day.” During this celebration, many of the traditions of the Celtic festivals were also included in their festivities. The evening before the event was known as “All Hallow’s Eve.” Later, it became known as “Halloween.”

As time went on, the event known as, ‘All Hallow’s Eve,’ continued to be a tradition in many parts of the world. They included many family friendly events. These events included costume wearing and judging events and giving out treats to children, which is a custom now known as trick or treating.

Today, Halloween falls right before winter. The night is longer, the air is chilly. Communities and families still enjoy some of the traditions of the past. These traditions include dressing up in costumes, giving out candy and lighting bonfires. Where do the black cats and witches come into play? They may come into play because of the superstitions that surround this holiday. As for the pumpkins, they grow during this season. They are delicious to eat and fun to decorate.

Halloween party game ideas

Games to play during your family Halloween party

Do you want your family to enjoy a safe and fun Halloween this year? Do you want to know that your kids are safe and still make sure that they have a Halloween that is memorable? Have you thought about hosting your own Halloween party?

The party can be a neighborhood event. You can invite all the neighbors you trust, including the kids. Everyone can dress up in the best costumes. The costumes can include the spookiest, the prettiest and the funniest ideas they can imagine. The night can be filled with good fun, games, candy and more.

How do you start? You start by gathering the family and have them all brain storm on some ideas for entertaining the guests. This can include some fun filled Halloween games. For the littlest ones, why not have Howling game. All you need is a big box. The box needs to be big enough for a child to sit inside.  Before the party, have your little one decorate the box to look like a haunted house. An adult should cut out the small windows. During the party, each child will take a turn sitting inside the box, with their eyes closed, while another child takes a turn outside, making a howling sound. The child inside must identify which child made the sound. If he or she gets the identity correct, the child wins a treat.

Younger children can also take part in a pin the tail on the donkey style game, with the donkey being replaced with a pumpkin.

Older children may take part in a mystery game, where the host hides a black stuffed cat (or other stuffed Halloween animal) somewhere in the party area. Give the children clues on where the cat is. The winner should be awarded a prize.

Of course, the best part of the night, should be an old fashioned costume judging contest. This can be done by category:  prettiest, scariest, and most original. All guests should be judged and the guests themselves should be the ones choosing the winners by random and anonymous drawings, which are tallied by the host and hostess.  Winners can be rewarded handy or random awards.

Experience Halloween Horror Night

My Halloween experience at Universal Studios

Back during my freshman year at college, a group of friends invited me to go with them to Universal Studios to have some spooky fun during the night of Halloween.  At first, I was hesitant about going due to the fact that I had an exam at 9 a.m. the next day.  But then after a few more phone calls from buddies of mine, I gave in, and decided to go to the amusement park with them.

For as long as I could remember, I had always been a "scaredy" cat.  Anytime someone sneaked up behind me, I would jump and yell.  Whenever I did manage to gather the courage to go to the theater to watch a scary movie, I had always ended up being the one to scream out loud.  So even before heading into Universal Studios, I was prepared to get spooked plenty of times throughout the night.

As soon as I walked through the gates of Universal Studios, I experienced my first scare for the evening.  One of the park’s staff had sneaked up behind me with a chainsaw, and he got me really good.  From that moment on, I made sure I was always holding at least one of my friend’s hands.

Through the course of the night, my friends and I made sure to walk through every single haunted house.  We also waited in line to get on most of the rides there.  It was an awesome experience. So even though I ended up doing not so well on my exam the next morning, I never once regretted my decision to go to Halloween Horror Night that year.

Sugar coated apple treats

Festive treats for parties or for the family

Who says Halloween has to be just for the kids? Who also says that an adult can’t enjoy some of the fun snacks and some of the favorite party foods that are often served during Halloween? Shouldn’t everyone enjoy a little bit of fun during this holiday?

First, what do you think of when you think Halloween? Do you think of sugar coated apples on a stick? Do you think of how much these were to eat when you were a child? Why not eat some today?

You will begin by gathering your ingredients: 12 red delicious apples, 12 candy sticks, 2 cups of sugar, 1 cup of light corn syrup, 1 cup of hot water, ¼ teaspoon of liquid red food coloring.

Line a baking sheet with some nonstick paper. Wash and dry your apples.

Combine sugar, corn, syrup, water into a medium size sauce pan. You will want to use medium to high heat. Stir ingredients until the sugar dissolves. Now you will want to place a candy thermometer into the candy. The goal is to not stir the mixture. Allow the temperature to rise to 250 degrees. Yet, watch to make sure the mixture does not become crystallized. Once the thermometer reaches 250 degrees remove it from the stove. Now slowly stir in the red food coloring.

Now you can begin adding the apples to the mixture. Place a stick into the apple and then place the apple into the mixture, twirling it around in it.  Allow the excess to drip back into the pan. Now place the apple onto the pan and allow the mixture to harden. Repeat these steps with each apple. Allow the apples to harden at room temperature for about an hour before eating.

Select the proper Halloween costumes for your children

Three tips for finding the perfect costumes

Finding kids' costumes is starting to get harder than you have ever imagined. However, if you know the top three things to look for, you can easily select the best kids costumes for your children to wear on Halloween and know they will be safe.

The first thing you should be looking for in these costumes is how visible they will make your children. Since your kids will be walking on the street after dark, you need to make sure the costumes they are wearing will help make them visible. Then you do not have to be concerned about them getting hit by a car.

Another thing you need to look at is the realism of the costume. Typically if your child is going out as a cartoon character, you want them to be looking like the character. So you need to evaluate how well the costume will look on them and how it can help them resemble the character they are going as.

Something else to consider is how warm the costume will be for your child. If you live in the southern part of the United States this is not a major issue, but if you are from the north, then you have to worry about cold weather. So you need to know how warm your kids will be inside of their costumes to guarantee they remain healthy after trick or treating.

Taking your children out trick or treating is exciting. However, it is harder than ever to select the right costume for your children. The tips that are provided will help you not only find the right costume for your child, but make it easy for you to know your child will be warm and safe while they are out trick or treating.

Shopping for Halloween candy doesn’t have to be an expensive chore

Tips to help one save money while shopping for Halloween candy, even the good stuff

Yes, shopping for Halloween candy can throw off your weekly or monthly budget, especially if you don’t know the tips on how to shop wisely. No, shopping wisely doesn’t mean that you can’t buy some of that good name brand candy that the kids and adults love. It just means you have to shop wisely and you can’t put this task off until the last minute.

First, you should head to your local dollar store. This is the store where you can stock on up on some of the essential items you will need. These items can even include some candy.

Once you are there, head to the Halloween area. Begin by browsing through the candy aisle. Do you see any name brand candy? Yes, some dollar stores will carry the name brand candy in bags. Look at the amount. If it is suitable, get it. Next, look at some of the bags of candy that have some individual wrapped chocolates or other candy items. Does any of them look like something you or your children would eat? These could make some nice filler candy? Consider purchasing some of these bags.

Now look beyond the candy. Try to find some zip locked snack bags that you can put the candy in and hand to the trick or treaters when they appear at your door. You shouldn’t just put your candy in a big bowl and allow the children to dig into it. If you do this, you may run out of candy, before you do trick or treaters. Finally, look for a festive bowl to put your bags in once you have them filled.

What is left? Next, is a trip to that department store or drug store. However, before you go, browse through any newspapers you may have at home for any candy coupons, as well as sale ads.

Yes, you can’t skip a trip to the bigger stores, if you want to get the good stuff to finish filling your snack bags. Yet, remember the bags you are filling don’t have to be completely full. A tip for this trip is to check prices and consider quantity. Make sure there is enough good candy in the bags that are worth the cost.

Crusader Knight Costume A Great Option

Why The Crusader Knight Is A Good Costume

Selecting a Halloween costume can be a challenge for anyone. However, if a person knows more about why they should select the Crusader Knight costume, it is easy to see this as a great costume from a historical stand point and impressing people.

The first reason a person should consider wearing this costume is it is one allowing the person to feel like they are a historical character. This is different then the presidential mask people wear or other mask because these people had a dramatic impact on the history of the European world and Middle East. So the person wearing this can start to portray this type of figure as well.

Another reason to wear the Crusader knight costume is the comfortable fit these provide. Often when a person wears a Halloween costume, you will be in it for a long time period. Since you may end up in a costume for a while you need to have one which is comfortable for them to fit in. With this costume a person can wear it for a long time and not get uncomfortable while wearing it.

Something else which people need to realize is this costume may also allow them to stand out. The reason a person will stand out with this costume is not many people go out as a Crusader knight. So this can be a costume which people will remember for how well it looks and the lack of other people looking like a knight.

Picking out a Halloween costume is harder then what many people have imagined. However, if they know about the reasons to select the Crusader knight costume, it is easy to see this as a great option to wear. Then they can go out and look unique because of what they have decided to wear.

Keeping your child safe this Halloween

Think safety and fun this Halloween

While you are coming up with a scary, sweet or creative costume for your child this Halloween, you should also think about his or her safety. This is something you should definitely think about if he or she will be roaming the street, taking part in the traditional trick or treating. Luckily, this year it seems manufacturers are also thinking about their safety. There is more safety geared Halloween themed items than any other year and they are readily available at most department stores.

These items include glow sticks that the kids can add to their costumes in the way of bracelets, necklaces and even glow enhanced masks.  These glow sticks work like the ones you see during the July Fourth Holiday. You just break the stick and presto, you have light. The light will burn throughout the Halloween night and your child will be seen by all, even passing drivers. Parents can even tape some reflective tape onto their child’s costumes to help them stand out even more during the dark night.

What other safety tips should parents remember and instill in their children during this fun night? Children should know not to Trick or Treat alone. It is best if children enjoy this night in groups. This is why many parents will get together or organize this event before the big night. A few parents will agree to chaperone a group of children at the same time. There is safety and more fun in numbers.

One should also think about safety when they are planning those creative costumes. Makeup can be better than wearing masks, even those that glow in the dark. Masks can detour breathing and can become hot. If one looks hard enough, they can find some glow in the dark makeup or they can stick with the glowing bracelets and necklaces.  One should also remember not to allow a child to carry a pretend sword or knife that has a sharp edge. Some of those plastic pretend knives can be a bit sharp at the edge.

Finally, teach your children that no treats are to be eaten until they are examined by a parent. You may even wish to take advantage of some programs that area hospitals provides including free X-ray exams for candy before allowing children to eat. You also may want to stick to allowing your children to only trick or treat at houses or businesses that you know and trust the adults.

Yes, Halloween can be a night of fun. By following a few simple safety rules, it can be a night of safe filled fun, as well.
